α1-Antitrypsin is an acute phase protein. It inhibits proteinase and serine proteases. AAT has a strong binding constant for leukocyte elastase. Increased serum levels are found in acute infection and inflammation, acute malaria, Pregnancy, anabolic steroid therapy and advanced malignant tumours.
