The Biorex Diagnostics VDRL test is a non-treponemal flocculation test for the detection and titration of reagins.  Reagins are antibodies raised against syphilis induced tissue damage.  VDRL Cardiolipin is an alcohol based solution which comprises of three chemically pure components – cardiolipin, lecithin and cholesterol.  When the antigen is added to the VDRL buffered saline solution, it forms an emulsion of fine particles which flocculate in the presence of reagins.
