Lipase is a pancreatic enzyme necessary for the absorption and digestion of nutrients. Lipases hydrolyse preferentially glycerol esters of long chain fatty acids producing fatty acid and monoglycerides. Clinical significance of lipase is in diagnosis of diseases of pancreas such as acute and chronic pancreatitis and obstruction of the pancreatic duct.
